“Enjoy The Delay” by Tashalynne

10 April 2015

So I’m driving to work this morning, and as I take the entrance ramp onto the highway, the buzzing traffic comes nearly to a halt. Within a couple of minutes I realize that if this slow pace continues I’m going to be dreadfully late to work. I call the office and am told that many of my colleagues are also in the jam, and when I hang up the phone, I hear these words from Jesus…”ENJOY THE DELAY!”

Hmmm…Just last night on the phone, my best friend had said to me “God sure does work slowly!” I had responded in agreement, and laughed to myself about how my perception of God’s timing in moving in the details of my life has changed as I have walked with Him over the past couple of decades. In the early days of my friendship with Jesus, I  assumed that when He put a particular desire or direction in my heart, it meant that I was going to be seeing its fulfillment right away, in no time. I had to walk through some discouraging times, learning that what seemed slow to me was simply beautiful, patient, wise waiting on His part.

So, as I’m sitting in the sea of drivers whose morning commute has been paralyzed,  I am filled with joy. I begin to see the delay as a gift from Him who loves me and wants me to enjoy these minutes just hanging out with Him. Friends, I believe that at the end of our earthly journey we will be able to see our time here as the seamless connection of one small moment to the next. As we relax into the glorious invitation to live in Him and be aware of Him in us, these moments of life grow richer and richer. We enjoy the present for the gift that it is…time together!

Rarely does God give us a blueprint for what He is going to do next in our lives. Yes, He gives us glimpses and stirs our hearts in preparation for changes that lie ahead, but I fully believe that He withholds most of the details and timing with the express purpose of giving us the JOY OF DEPENDENCE ON HIM in the moment! He doesn’t want us to miss out on the amazing experience of trusting Him…of feeling our need and our weakness and knowing that He is holding us in His hands and is providing all that our hearts need for today, for this present moment! At times, what we perceive to be delays are simply opportunities to cultivate a more intimate knowing of Him. And then, when He unfolds some of the plans He has been working on all along, we will be able to appreciate His gifts as he intended, as experiences to be enjoyed TOGETHER!

This afternoon as I walked along with several kindergarten students, I was given another precious gift of delay, which I would have missed if I had been focused on an agenda. One little boy who is learning to speak English looked up at me with a wide-eyed expression of joyful hope that I would say yes to his request… “Can we get some butterflies?” It took me a minute, but I realized that he had gotten his words mixed up a bit, and what he was really asking me was “Can we pick some flowers?” We had just passed some dandelions and some kind of flowering weeds, and to him this would be the most fantastic thing to stop and collect them to take to his family. When I explained that they were flowers, not butterflies, he just laughed and we spent the next moment having a spontaneous flower picking party. If I had been sticking with an agenda, I would have missed this little moment in the day. Instead, I felt Jesus’ joy in this child’s exuberance over the beauty of the Spring flowers.

Friends, we live in such a busy culture. We have so many demands upon our time, and often we take on responsibilities and make commitments which are far beyond what our Lord would have us to, because we have a misconception about what it is that He is really about. And even as we are walking through the activities that He has called us to take part in, we can make it so complicated, so results- oriented.

So often, we may have preconceived ideas about what our day should look like, and what we think we ought to accomplish. I know that rat race all too well. Taking part in it can steal one’s joy in a heartbeat. The GOOD NEWS is that we don’t have to give in…we who are in Christ can spend time with Him wherever we are, tuning in and allowing Him to take us deeper and deeper into that love our hearts crave and that contentment of His presence which slows us down to appreciate Him in the little things.

My prayer for us all is that we will FULLY ENJOY EVERY DELAY, and see every “interruption” as an invitation to slow down and have a chat with Jesus and be sensitive to His Spirit within…HE IS OUR LIFE!

Peace to you and yours,
